These paintings are evidence of my long struggle to see, of striving to put down, in oil paint on canvas, all of the fleeting emotions that repeatedly take me into reverie. After years of searching for my deepest artistic “fathers,” I began to focus in on the work of Hopper, Vermeer, de Hooch, and Bonnard. There is something about recreating spaces, and objects, in the light of the everyday, that exhilarates me. “Sculpting” the mass of forms, using traditional concepts of highlights, half-tones, and shadows, feels to me like a way of “nailing down” the ephemeral. So the hope, then, is that these paintings can express something that encourages, that inspires, that helps people to keep moving, and seeing.
